Bon Voyage party at home port (Amelia Island Yacht Basin) tonight.  Saturday, long leg to Fernandina Harbor (4 miles) and Sunday, trip starts for real.  Planning outside (ocean) to Savannah.  Stay tuned, we think we've covered all bases and are READY TO GO!

Sunday, April 13, 2003

Met new cruise friends yesterday, Ed and Johanna Lane aboard Maine Idea, (pix) a custom 50' wood trawler designed by Joel White (1983).  Celebrated their friend Richard's birthday with wife Diane at Pompeo's (***), our favorite Fernandina Restaurant.  Left this A.M. for Savannah but had to return due to leaking exhaust muffler.  Our friend Aaron Rawls is repairing (pix) and we hope to be underway again tomorrow.  Stay tuned.

Monday, April 14, 2003

Well things not going too well today.  Aaron's patch did not stop the leak in the exhaust muffler, so we made 2 trips to our Mainship friends in Midway, to secure a new muffler and a piece of hose.  Turns out the muffler input pipe is too long, so Aaron will cut out 4 inches and re-fiberglass and we'll try again tomorrow.   Thank heavens for Aaron.  He has been in and out of this tiny access way in the cockpit too many times too count.  Thank heavens Mainship has added a 2nd hatch in the cockpit as the access for the older 34 Pilots is not user friendly.  Thanks and kudos to Mike Hankins, Allan Grippe and Jim Krueger at Mainship for their prompt and helpful response today.  Stay tuned, we are now averaging 4 miles a day on our 2500 mile trip!!  Met 2 more Loopers today on the dock; Duty Free with Trev and Annette Whitehouse of  The Great Loop Boat Trip, and Sea Lyon, a 350 Mainship with John and Barbara Lyon (just a name coincidence I guess). We were hoping to buddy-boat with them on the outside to Savannah, but, OH WELL!  My son Paul continues to amaze and improve on the site, so any suggestions, please let us know. 'Till next, sweet dreams. I'm exhausted and Aaron did all the work.  Thanks again, FRIEND!!

Tuesday, April 15, 2003 (Tax Day)

FINALLY underway, thanks again Aaron (pix)! Left Amelia at 1:15 PM to Jekyll Harbor Marina. Dinner aboard, dessert at SeaJay's. Don't know what tomorrow brings, stay tuned!

Wednesday, April 16, 2003

Great day on the water and marshes: sea birds, dolphins and boats (pix of shrimper and Oystercatcher).  Left Jekyll at 7 AM and arrived Palmer Johnson Marina in Savannah at 5 PM. Met "loopers” Don & Jan Burton on Finally Two To Sea, and Dick & Wendy Schmitt on Dicks Dinghy (sorry, no pix). On to Beaufort, SC in the AM, stay tuned!

Thursday, April 17, 2003

Left Savannah at 7:15 AM., headed up the Wilmington River past a beautiful old cemetery and “BAM!” Hit by a thick fog bank.  Just as we were ready to turn around, a large yacht with radar showed up and we followed him for a few miles 'til it cleared up.  Most of the day was spent on calm Georgia and South Carolina rivers and sounds until we landed in the downtown Beaufort (SC) marina behind the 75' Oystercatcher and the 117' Gatster at 2:30 PM. We walked into the beautiful old city, looked at some of the beautiful homes (pix), had dinner at one of Tom's favorite restaurants and now mine,  Emily's (*****) (pix), and walked the riverfront park after dinner.  This must be one of the prettiest waterfront towns on the East Coast.

Friday, April 18, 2003 & Saturday, April 19, 2003

Left Beaufort at 7 AM for Charleston’s Buzzard Roost Marina. Windy, overcast day but uneventful, arrived at 2:30 PM. Dinner at cousins, Marcia Clare Lucas and Nobby Clare.  Marsha’s friend Bobby masterfully bbq'ed the strip steaks and we all had a great time (pix of 3 Clares). Sat AM to Charleston City Marina and tour of downtown and the old straw marketplace (pix), where Tom met up with the Easter Bunny (pix). Quiz for the day: What goes hippity-hop through the Mud??  Stay tuned for the answer tomorrow.

Sunday, April 20, 2003 (Easter)

Great dinner last night at Roger & Wanda's favorite, Hominy Grill,  5 stars (*****). Beautiful day today to Georgetown, SC. Town closed up tight as a drum, but lovely char grilled lamb chops on the dock, pix today if I can get them to Paul (having trouble with my Verizon connection) of Brian & Sonia on Flash ll & Eos a beautiful 47' catamaran from Avalon, NJ. Also Tom on the deserted waterfront at Georgetown (alma mater) and the Admiral in her Easter bonnet. Now I know you expected the answer to yesterday’s quiz, but I think I'll hold you in suspense 'till tomorrow, stay tuned!

Monday, April 21, 2003

Well, enough suspense. "The Easter Pig" goes hippity-hop through the mud. (Aaron was close!!). Today was another gorgeous day on the beautiful Waccamaw River. We arrived at the Osprey Marina, where we met up again with our delightful new friends from Wendover, Ontario, Canada. Dinner aboard L'Ancetre, their custom steel trawler. Admiral Lise made a great dinner and Captain "J.J." (Jean-Jacques) provided liberal amounts of good cheer. We will cruise with them tomorrow and try to get pix of their salty boat. Stay tuned!

Tuesday, April 22, 2003

Lazy Day to Barefoot Landing, a free dock at a huge shopping complex in Myrtle Beach, SC. Today’s stretch of the Waccamaw River is at flood stage, 7 feet above normal (pix). In company today with L'ancetre (pix), our new Canadian friends, Lise and JJ.  Dinner at Umbertos', 4 stars (****). Weather is here, wish y'all were beautiful!!

Wednesday, April 23, 2003

Forgot to mention yesterday how delightful Osprey Marina was Monday. We recommend it to any cruisers! Today we left Barefoot at 7:15 AM with L'Ancetre, our friends from Ottawa, and headed north slowly past the SC/NC border passing the Coquina Harbor Lighthouse (aka Governor's Lighthouse) in Myrtle Beach (pix) and the North Carolina beaches (pix of Holden Beach). Arrived at Southport Marina at 2 PM and toured the historic city by foot. Dinner at Mr. P's on the Waterfront (***1/2). Coffee and cognac on the boat and a beautiful sunset.
